Breastfeeding, over feed?

How many times a day does your baby breastfeed? I took my 11 week old to doctors yesterday for her reflux and the doctor told me I was over feeding heršŸ˜… I said she typically feeds between 8 and 9 times a day, google is telling me thatā€™s average?

Ignore the Dr!! Breastfed babyā€™s are extremely unlikely to over feed & the amount your feeding her is normal. Try different holds where sheā€™s more upright like the koala hold if you can (my boy had reflux too but I never managed to get this position rightšŸ˜‚), and try keep her upright after feeds as long as possible. And go back to a different GP and ask for baby gaviscon or omeprazole if you need to!

@Lara he was pretty useless, he told me to go back in 2 weeks and if not any better I have to put her on formula, I will definitely be asking to see someone else! Sheā€™s had gaviscon and did ask about omeprazole but he said no x

YOU know youā€™re baby best point blank period. I had a doctor tell me that I changed doctors and the new didnā€™t say I was over feeding.

If your baby was being fed too much she would spit it a lot of it, and wouldnā€™t be crying for food. Donā€™t listen to the doctor you know your baby more than anyone! Definitely try different positions and maybe stop the feed half way through to help with gas x

Doctors have no idea about breastfeeding to be totally honest, madly theyā€™re not required to have any knowledge on it! My baby fed upwards of 15 times a day at that age. Nursing is for so much more than just milk. Keep doing what youā€™re doing x

@Lauren thatā€™s crazy!! I exclusively breastfed until 10 months and didnā€™t stop completely until 12. Iā€™m glad youā€™re standing your ground and seeing someone else. I will say my boys reflux got so much better when I cut out dairy, might be worth trying for a couple of weeks to see if it makes any difference?x

You canā€™t over feed a breastfed baby x

He sounds like an idiot! Iā€™m a midwife & you canā€™t over feed a breastfed baby. Nor will switching to formula help with reflux šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø keep feeding on demand, youā€™re doing fab. Is there a reason he said no to omeprazole? I was prescribed this for my daughter x

He told you that youā€™d had to put them on formula??? What would that even help? Time for a new doctor šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Also no reflux med helped my baby so it was tough for a bit BUT she completely ā€œgrew out of itā€ by 5 months.

My EBF baby had omeprazole and gaviscon for reflux, weā€™ve been under a paediatrician, infant feeding team and dietician because hers turned out to be due to a diary intolerance and her weight gain was slow. My baby fed much more than your little one at that age, at least 12-15 times in 24h, and even now, at 8 months and on 3 meals a day, she still BF 8-10 times! I would insist on seeing someone else if I were you, Iā€™ve always been told formula is likely to make reflux worse, to stick with breastfeeding and that you cannot over feed them if they are breastfed

There is a great book called why infant reflux matters, highly recommended reading/listening to it as can help give ideas as to why baby has reflux. Also explains how the drugs given by doctors donā€™t tend to work as they target stomach acid babies just donā€™t make much of it. We had some real issues but it was a mix between having tongue tie and what appears to be a dairy allergy/intolerance. Little one is 5 months and Iā€™m still battling with the doctors to get them to actually listen to me. Anyway I found the book was a lot more help than most medical professionals in terms of understanding how babyā€™s digestive system works and what reflux is and what causes it. We rarely get any at all after the tongue tie was sorted and dairy was cut out. There are honestly so many reasons for reflux and it tends to be a symptom with a cause behind it - another reason using meds doesnā€™t always help because it isnā€™t tackling the actual issues.

My girl eats what feels like all day at least 8 times but you're not hurting your baby it's natural for them to eat so much

My health visitors and GP told me you canā€™t overfeed a breastfed baby. They kept saying that even when my baby went from 50th centile weight to 99th centile weight šŸ˜‚ My LO also has reflux but my god, she knows when sheā€™s hungry. Our GP has put her in omeprazole - if your GP says no, ask to see a different GP. You shouldnā€™t be forced to go on formula, thatā€™s not ok. Formula, if anything, will make the reflux worse.

You canā€™t over feed a breastfed baby. They eat until they are full and thereā€™s no way to measure the amount that theyā€™re eating. If she has reflux make sure to burp often during the feed and hold her upright afterwards for 20 minutes minimum

Your doctor is dumb. Just pulling shit out of his ass. I feed my baby around 15 times a day, EBF. Sheā€™s 16.6lbs (7.56kg) at 4 months and has almost doubled her weight from birth. She spits up frequently due to eating a lot at once and then immediately doing something to engage her core šŸ¤£ But it isnā€™t a big deal unless it bothers the baby

My baby is Breastfed and has reflux as well. She spits out so much all day and night but she is not in pain with it. I called the Dr and the said I have to use bottles and give gaviscon which is not what I want as I want to breastfeed directly I have decided to just live with the reflux for now as sheā€™s not in pain with it and its just more laundry for us Her weight is also very good so she is still keeping enough down Just choose your battles

@Robiat you can give gaciscon and breastfeed, thereā€™s instructions on how to spoon feed it in the packet :)

You canā€™t overfeed a breastfed baby

Not a male doctor spreading absolute bullshit about breastfeeding... šŸ™ƒšŸ„“šŸ«  Please speak to an infant feeding specialist if you have any concerns about feed frequency. However, 8/9 times I'd say isn't that much!

It is unlikely that you are overfeeding unless you are using formula as well. If you are in UK, I'd igbore the GP. They are not really trained about breastfeeding and most know less about it than moms
