I changed the cat litter tray 😬 am I in trouble?

Hello ladies! I'm getting really worried as I changed my cat's litter tray this morning and now I'm scared that I contracted toxoplasmosis 😭 I am 17+2 weeks pregnant and I previously had a miscarriage last October. I used gloves, bleach, and soap to wash the cat litter tray after I emptied it directly in the bin. There was a tiny poo spot on the tray and I washed it with warm water, bleach and soap. Please reassure me as I'm really scared 🥲🥲🥲

I forgot to mention that I disposed of the gloves after I finished washing the tray and washed my hands straight away with soap and warm water twice

You’ll be fine, I know how anxiety inducing it can be especially after a loss but try not to stress. I empty my cats litter tray every other day as my husband works away, I use gloves and dispose of them afterwards. It’s extremely extremely rare to contract toxoplasmosis, the litter tray has to sit there dirty for a really long time and even then using protection etc you’ll be safe x

I had the same anxiety with toxoplasmosis in my last pregnancy as I saw sheep in a field when walking and let them gum with their mouths on my hands and cuddled them etc and someone messaged me after to say you shouldn’t when pregnancy. I worried for weeks and was totally fine x

@Cass omg thank you! You have no idea how relieved I am to read this! It's usually my husband who changes it but today it's my day off and I was cleaning so I got carried away 😬 and I thought if I followed safety measures I should be fine. I'm still waiting for him to get back from work and I'm very apprehensive of how he will react because he wouldn't let me do it 😭 I hope everything will be okay with my baby. Thank you so much for your comment x

If your cats an indoor cat the chances of them carrying toxoplasmosis is virtually zero. If outdoor then odds are still small. It comes from them eating small mammals / raw meat. It sounds like you took precautions and washed your hands so I wouldn't be worried. I've changed my cats litter tray while pregnant before and just washed hands thoroughly like I do after handling raw meat when cooking My understanding is that most cases of toxoplasmosis in pregnancy occur from eating unwashed fruit / veg where the soil has been contaminated with cat poo, not from changing litter trays as you would wash your hands after that and before eating anything. Hope that also eases any worry!

@Kate she goes outside but doesn't stay that long, just strolls around and comes back home. Thank you so much for your comment, it does bring relief and reassurance! Safe to say I will never change the cat litter tray for the rest of my pregnancy 🥲 it's the first time ive done it since I fell pregnant. We've always been very cautious with my husband. I did wash my hands thoroughly twice. Let's hope I didnt catch anything! Thank you again x

You are fine speak it and know it! Let that cat poo outside lol

@Cristina haha I hope so! Thank you! x

You should avoid it, maybe get your husband to do it just to be safe!
